The Pocket Park at 30th & 1/2 was founded in 2023, after neighbors finally got tired of looking out their back doors onto an overgrown alley. Inspired by the many visiting bird species – and exasperated by the many invasive plant species – the neighbors decided to turn the tiny triangle of land into a public greenspace filled with native plants that could nourish human, avian, and insect denizens alike.
Ninebark and buttonbush shrubs were installed in spring of 2023, and the garden-beds-to-be were sheet mulched. We are looking forward to tree installation in fall of 2023, with herbaceous perennials to be planted in spring of 2024. Current garden plans include raised beds for annual plants, picnic tables and benches, horseshoe pits, and the ever-important removal of invasive plants.
